Necessity may require Ohio State to put Sabino into the game against Minnesota, but I feel for Sabino.? He doesn’t get his opportunity for two full years at linebacker.? He gets to help on special teams,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but not for the previous eight games where we could’ve really used him.? It’s just unfortunate.
Minnesota Flashback
The Attack Force award on defense and the Jack Tatum award for the best good, clean big hit of the week both went to linebacker Andrew Sweat.
Long snapper Jake McQuaide was the player of the week on the special units.
I don’t have many Minnesota games in my possession and I’m too busy to put one of the few I have remaining online.? Instead, here’s this Kirk Herbstreit gem from 1991.
Dan Herron, who rushed for 74 yards and two touchdowns, was the offensive player of the week.
After expressing His divine hatred for Michigan’s secondary before the season, the Angry Secondary-Hating God has turned His eyes, and Almighty wrath, towards Ohio State’s unit.? CJ Barnett was finished for the season midway through the Miami game.? The Donnie has yet to come back from a shoulder injury suffered shortly thereafter.? Tyler Moeller bowed out of the Illinois game almost as soon as it began.? More bad news cometh.
Christian Bryant, Moeller’s replacement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is still in the hospital, following surgery on his swollen foot.? The prognosis? He will probably miss six weeks, giving him the necessary time to be in full effect for Ohio State’s bowl game, wherever that is.? Without knowing the specifics of the surgery, everything I’ve read insinuates it’s a matter of proper healing before he can play football again.? In other words, whatever was infected was removed, but he can destroy his foot if he tried to do anything strenuous on it.? Whatever the case, it’s unfortunate he will miss the stretch run.? He filled in admirably for Moeller and is very effective in run support for a guy his size and in his position.
Defensive lineman Cameron Heyward, with five tackles and a sack, was the defensive player of the week.
Okay, so maybe Tressel indirectly said that, a function of him relaying what Terrelle Pryor told him.? But still, in Jim Tressel’s own (not really, but I’m rolling with it) words: “Philly Brown is the truth, you know”.? I’m assuming “you know” is an error or revision in the transcript, originally reading “ya dig?”, “ya feel me son?” or “yo”.? Only because Jim Tressel is down with the kids’ lingo.
Tressel: “Philly Brown is the truth, you know”
Ohio State Will Burn Sabino’s Redshirt
From the “Hmmm…” department of roster news, all signs are pointing to Etienne Sabino playing against the Gophers.? Yes, ‘Bino.? Sabino is not coming back from an injury or a suspension, or anything like that.? Rather, he was given the option to redshirt at the beginning of the season after Andrew Sweat beat him out for the SAM linebacker spot.? This would have given ‘Bino and Sweat — two classmates in the Brew Crew group — two years each to be starting linebackers.? It was a tough pill to swallow at the time, and it may be tougher to swallow now.
The defensive backs aren’t the only ones hurting.? Ross Homan will miss the Minnesota game as well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an artifact of the injury he suffered early into the ill-fated Wisconsin game.? He’s on the gradual road back to the field, starting with in-pool running, and will no doubt benefit from the bye week.? Likewise, Dorian Bell will miss this game as a result of the concussion he suffered against Indiana.? That will be the third straight week for Dorian Bell, not a common occurrence for concussion-related injuries.
I’m finally back in the saddle, but I was not able to watch a single snap from the Purdue game this Saturday.? To that extent, I’ll be relying on some of your observations to account for how we played so lights out on defense and how our running game continued to blossom under the direction of Boom Herron.
Players of the week on the scout teams: Marcus Hall (offense); David Durham (defense); Chris Maxwell (special units).
Give ‘em hell, Sweaty.? I was always high on him coming out of high school.
Also, surprise! Corey Brown — the Monroeville product — is now done for the year after a knee surgery suffered during the Purdue game.? Brown, who switched numbers from #3 to #9 so he can be on kick coverage with Brandon Saine, was also moved to safety amid uncertainties about how well Orhian Johnson was filling in for Barnett.? Not only is he done for the year, something you would expect with any kind of injury suffered this late into the season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but he’s out for spring ball as well.? Goodie.
Injuries Mounting for Buckeyes
Bryant Browning was named as the Jim Parker lineman of the week.
Moving forward, the Buckeyes have one more game to play before finally getting to their bye week.? Though I have strong misgivings about the bye week likely returning a punt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], kick or two for a touchdown against our special teams, I have no doubt we will handle the bye week comfortably.? Likewise, the Buckeyes — battling injuries aplenty — will have to get past a lifeless Gophers program with an interim head coach before the season concludes in earnest with Penn State, Iowa and Michigan.? Here are some things worth knowing before the Buckeyes travel to Minnesota for their first game in the Gophers’ new place, under the primetime lights of ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 (8:00pm kickoff).? Keep Tressel’s presser recap handy.
When he first got here, I always take a little bit of direction from the older guys when they have their little seven on sevens and stuff and I like hearing them talk about who’s pretty good. I remember Terrelle telling me one day, he said, hey, that Philly Brown is the truth, you know. Now, he didn’t have to know any coverages and he didn’t have to know any plays. He was just out there. His ability was the truth. Well, how fast can you learn things? He really learns football. He has a good sense of it. We have felt that he was going to progress and he has.
I’m a little unsure of the advisability of this move, and of the advisability of it right now.? To recap: playing Sabino becomes necessary because of hurting depth at special teams and, especially, in the linebacking crew.? Losing the best player in the linebacker unit (Homan), and probably our best reserve (Bell) for the time being means the coaching staff is unsure enough of Newsome and Klein to burn Sabino’s planned redshirt.? If the loss of these two linebackers did not matter for Purdue, are we to believe it will for Minnesota?? To be sure, I remember Newsome’s errors against Wisconsin vividly.? But, Minnesota is no Wisconsin.? If this move has to be done, I’m wondering if we could at least wait until the bye week before making that decision.? By that time, we should get a better picture on where we stand with Homan and Bell.? With respect to special teams? Well, we’ve already seen the worst of it.? Am I to believe it could get worse with Bell’s nagging injury and his high school teammate’s season ending injury.
Link.
It’s obvious to Buckeye fans that Corey “Philly” Brown has been a pleasant surprise among the true freshman in this class.? It’s hard to tell who among the incoming freshman has been more important (Hankins, Norwell, Basil, Bryant), but Brown’s contributions have been welcome.? He got his first career touchdown against Purdue, one of many more to come we hope.? Tressel was asked about him, and what follows is unedited from the transcript.
Players of the Week: Purdue
