Adeloju won his James Dyson Award for inventing the Longreach, which uses modified bazooka technology to fire a potentially life-saving buoyancy aid 150m out to sea. Hence the Buoyancy Bazooka nickname. The industrial design student bagged $16,000 in prize money,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a further $16,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 going to UNSW.
James Dyson knows what he’s talking about when it comes to inventions and innovation, so to be given an award named after the Brit responsible for the bagless vacuum cleaner and the bladeless fan is quite an achievement. Which is a feat that University of NSW student Sam Adeloju can now lay claim to.

A young Australian student has won the coveted James Dyson award for the Longreach, otherwise known as the Buoyancy Bazooka.
While the Longreach is only a prototype at this stage, Adeloju is already in talks about conducting trials to test the full potential of his invention. If successful then there’s no reason this won’t become commercially available, and you could eventually see the Buoyancy Bazooka installed on ships and docksides around the world.
Bazookas aren’t something you’d normally associate with saving people’s lives. In fact, when used as a weapon to fire missiles they can do a hell of a lot of damage to both people and property. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one young Australian inventor has modified the basic technology so that bazookas could, in the future, be saving rather than destroying people’s lives.
The Longreach is a device weighing just 3.5kg but which has the capacity to fire a lifebuoy 150m out to people in distress. The lifebuoy is actually a condensed bullet of hydrophobic foam which expands upon contact with water. This means the lifebuoy can travel straight and true to the target without being adversely affected by wind and weather. And 150m is a lot further than most people could ever throw.
